Story of Alva Rez

Amber grew up as a farm girl with a dream of owning her own company. She came from a middle-class background - no luxury holidays, just a hard-working family building a life together. Her dad was a civil engineer at the Christchurch City Council, and on weekends, he ran his own septic tank cleaning business, demonstrating an incredible work ethic that deeply inspired her. Sadly, he passed away when Amber was just 12, a devastating loss that left her mum to raise her and her younger brother alone while also managing the farm. Amber always admired her mum’s resilience - a woman who, once she set her mind to something, would stop at nothing to achieve it.

A couple years later, Amber landed her first job at a dairy farm down the road. As the youngest assistant, she took on the toughest jobs no one else wanted. These early experiences shaped her strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit,  as she knew she did not want to work for someone else.

Her entrepreneurial journey truly began in her teenage years. Amber got into the music scene, drawn to the energy of festivals and gigs, where she met a tight-knit crew, who had an impressive sound system called "Boom Candy". This sparked her interest in event planning. For her 16th birthday, she threw her first event on her mum’s farm – a small but successful gathering. Although her mum insisted on a 100-person cap, Amber’s business instincts kicked in, and she quietly extended the guest list, turning a healthy profit.

The following year, she took it up a notch for her 17th, organising a much larger event with just over 1,000 attendees – a bold move that ultimately got shut down. Undeterred, she planned another for her 18th, this time scaling back to a more intimate gathering in her mum’s shearing shed. It was a success, not just financially but also in the connections and memories she made. However, after an unfortunate incident involving stolen livestock, Amber decided to step away from the event scene.

As she approached the end of high school, Amber still dreamed of owning her own business. Like many, she felt the pressure to follow the conventional path – university, a steady job, a "safe" career. But deep down, she always knew she was meant to carve her own path, driven by the hustle and independence she had embraced from a young age.

While pursuing her second year of her bachelor's degree in 2022, Amber realised what business she wanted to do. It was during this time that she identified a gap in the market; friends and acquaintances were dissatisfied with swimwear options that combined affordability, quality, and style. She didn’t know exactly how she’d do it, but Amber’s determination led her to spend two years meticulously sampling and refining her designs. Alva Rez was launched 8th February 2024. Although university helped in some aspects she regrets going.

Amber’s love for the ocean, warm weather, and her favourite holiday destination, Bali, played a significant role in shaping Alva Rez. She wanted to bring a touch of Bali’s vibrant energy to New Zealand with swimwear that offers both staple essentials and something a bit different. Each piece in the collection reflects Amber’s personal touch - she sketches every design herself, ensuring it’s both stylish and comfortable. From cheeky cuts ideal for tanning to full-coverage options, Amber aimed to create designs that are inclusive for everyone. Working alongside her partner James, Amber crafted a line of men’s shorts that are both trendy and practical, featuring classic colours and patterns. And as someone who loves to travel, Amber dreams of incorporating even more travel influences into her future collections.

Amber is thrilled about what’s next for Alva Rez and can’t wait to see where the journey takes her. Her goal is simple: to create swimwear that makes people feel good, look great, and embrace every moment of summer.
